Payton Strain Dies in Devastating ATV Accident in Louisiana
A beloved daughter and friend was lost this past weekend following a heartbreaking ATV accident in Bush, Louisiana. 13-year-old Payton Strain tragically passed away early Sunday morning at Children's Hospital New Orleans due to severe injuries sustained in the crash.
The accident occurred on Saturday evening around 7 pm along Churchill Downs Drive, just south of Hialeah Drive in the Grande Hills neighborhood. Payton and her closest friend, also 13, were riding a four-wheel ATV when it veered off the road for unknown reasons and collided with a tree.
Both young girls were rushed to a St. Tammany Parish hospital for initial treatment. Payton's injuries were critical, however, and she was transported to Children's Hospital New Orleans for advanced care. Despite the staff's valiant efforts, Payton sadly succumbed to her traumatic injuries in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Her friend sustained significant injuries as well but is thankfully recovering and in stable condition after the harrowing ordeal. A relative stated that the two girls were extremely close and often like sisters.
Heartbreaking Loss for Family and Friends
The sudden passing of Payton Strain has left her family, friends, and the Bush community devastated. She was described as a bright, fun-loving teenager who lived life to the fullest and cherished time spent with loved ones.
St. Tammany Parish coroner Dr. Charles Preston released a statement imploring parents to take extreme caution when allowing children to operate ATVs unsupervised after the tragedy:
"All too often families are devastated by accidents involving ATVs, and especially those that severely injure or take the lives of children. The Coroner's office staff joins me and the victim's family and friends in mourning this loss of life and in urging parents to take the greatest possible precautions in allowing children to drive an ATV alone or without attentive supervision."
Fundraiser Established to Ease Financial Burden
A GoFundMe page titled "In Memory of Payton Strain" has been set up by Kelly Tranchina of Sun, Louisiana to assist Payton's family with funeral costs during this incredibly difficult time.
The fund has currently raised over $12,000 of its $25,000 goal. On the page, Kelly writes:
"Please keep the Strain family in your prayers. We are humbly asking for any assistance or donation to help ease the financial burden in this difficult time."
Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated as Payton's loved ones prepare to lay her to rest.
ATV Safety Concerns for Parents
Payton's heartbreaking death has drawn attention to potential ATV safety concerns, especially when operated by children. While incredibly fun recreational vehicles, ATVs can also be hazardous without proper precautions.
Parents are urged to closely supervise children under 16 operating ATVs and ensure proper safety gear is worn, including a helmet, goggles, gloves, and boots. Operators under 16 should also complete a hands-on training course.
Ensuring the ATV size matches the child's age and size is also critical - larger machines are harder to control and more prone to rollovers. Finally, children should always ride during daylight hours on familiar terrain.
Honoring Payton's Bright Life and Spirit
While her time here was far too short, Payton Strain touched countless lives with her vibrant personality and zest for life. She will be forever missed by all those who were blessed to know her.
The Bush community will honor and pay tribute to the exceptional young woman who left an indelible mark on this world. May her memory live on through the many lives she influenced throughout her 13 years.
Rest in peace sweet Payton - your light will never fade.
